Outer Banks fishing guide

Fishing Charters in Wanchese, NC

Wanchese is the working end of the Outer Banks. It is a commercial fishing village on the south end of Roanoke Island, it builds some of the best sportfishing boats in the world, and it sits a short run inside Oregon Inlet — which puts the Gulf Stream about as close as it gets on this coast.

01

A working harbour, not a resort

Wanchese sits at the southern tip of Roanoke Island, across the water from Manteo and about twenty minutes from Nags Head. It is the commercial fishing centre of the northern Outer Banks — trawlers, packing houses, the seafood industrial park on the harbour — and the charter boats work alongside all of it rather than at a separate marina.

Set your expectations accordingly. There is no boardwalk and no gift shop row. What there is, is a genuine fishing harbour where the boats are maintained by people who fish for a living, and a village that has been doing this since long before anybody came here on holiday.

02

The run to the ocean

Boats leaving Wanchese run south and east through Roanoke Sound to Oregon Inlet, then out through the inlet to the ocean. That adds a stretch of protected sound running to the front of the day compared with a boat tied up at the inlet itself, and then the offshore run is identical — the Gulf Stream sits roughly 35 miles east of the sea buoy, among the shortest blue-water runs on the Atlantic coast.

Oregon Inlet itself is the part that demands local knowledge. It shoals, the channel moves, and it can run genuinely rough on an outgoing tide against an easterly wind. Captains based in Wanchese cross it constantly and know it as it is this month rather than as the chart drew it last year. That is a real argument for booking a boat that works out of this harbour.

03

Where the boats come from

Wanchese is one of the centres of Carolina custom sportfishing boat building — Bayliss Boatworks and Spencer Yachts both build here, and the flared-bow Carolina hull that the rest of the world copies was developed on this stretch of coast by people solving the specific problem of crossing Oregon Inlet in a chop.

That matters more than it sounds. The fleet running out of this harbour is largely purpose-built for these waters, and a fair number of the captains have a direct hand in how their boat was put together. It is not a coincidence that the village that builds the boats also runs a serious charter fleet.

04

What you fish for out of Wanchese

Offshore, the calendar is the Oregon Inlet calendar: yellowfin tuna in spring and autumn, mahi-mahi from May into August, white and blue marlin and sailfish through the summer, wahoo and king mackerel in the autumn, and bottom fishing on the wrecks and ledges year round. Full days are the standard shape of an offshore trip here.

Inshore, Roanoke Sound is on the doorstep and fishes for red drum, speckled trout and flounder from spring through autumn, with the big autumn bull red run around the inlet. Because the sound is protected, inshore boats out of Wanchese keep fishing on days when nothing is getting through the inlet — worth remembering if your week of holiday comes with a bad forecast.

05

Booking a Wanchese boat

Prices here track the rest of the northern fleet: $1,600 to $2,600 for a full-day Gulf Stream charter, $900 to $1,500 for nearshore and three-quarter days, and $450 to $700 for an inshore half day — all per boat for up to six anglers, including tackle, bait, ice, fuel and the vessel licence. The mate gratuity of 15 to 20 percent is separate and expected in cash.

Captains who run out of this harbour confirm their availability by text each afternoon, so an open date on this site is open on the boat rather than a guess from a stale database. Book online, pay by card, and the captain has it on their phone immediately. No commission is taken from the captain and nothing is added to your price.

Common questions

Where is Wanchese?
At the south end of Roanoke Island, about twenty minutes from Nags Head and just across the water from Manteo. It is the commercial fishing harbour of the northern Outer Banks.
How do boats get to the ocean from Wanchese?
South and east through Roanoke Sound to Oregon Inlet, then out through the inlet. The Gulf Stream is roughly 35 miles east of the sea buoy from there.
Is Wanchese better than Oregon Inlet or Manteo?
They fish the same water through the same inlet. Pick on the captain and the boat rather than the harbour — the difference is a short run across the sound.
Do I need a fishing licence?
No. North Carolina for-hire vessels carry a blanket licence that covers everyone aboard for the trip.
